AOL : Abstracted Expressions

Crossposted from 12ozProphet

GHAVA was commissioned by Wolff Olins to create a series of art and videos for AOL’s new brand identity which launched December 2009. I had the chance to get messy making art for few of these and shot stop-frame animations of the art being created. Check out more of the work GHAVA did for this project here.

I did this a while ago an am just now getting around to posting about it. My thinking with this was that it was in such a high-traffic area and bound to be added too quickly, I never thought of the piece as being finished. Skulphone had previously put up a poster, “SMILE YOU’RE IN NYC”, that I ultimately worked around. You can see more photos here.

DRAW is a must-see art exhibition featuring original drawings by over 400 artists in the skateboard, music, urban, tattoo, literature, design, illustration, animation, psychedelic and new contemporary art worlds. The show is a tribute to the often underrated but fundamental building block of visual and graphic art: the drawing.

DRAW is the largest contemporary drawing exhibition to emerge out of New York City. Most recently, the exhibit drew over 2000 people to its London debut at StolenSpace, East London’s Leading Contemporary Urban Art Gallery. The exhibit debuted in October of 2006 at NYC’s Fuse Gallery to phenomenal response from audience and press alike. It had an equally impressive showing during the SXSW 2007 Music and Interactive-Film Festival in Austin, Texas. DRAW is currently on a six-country world tour that includes future showings in Tokyo, Paris, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Berlin.

DRAW is curated by Erik Foss and Curse Mackey with guest curators Justin Giarla, Rich Jacobs, Jamie O’Shea, Tim Barber, Damian Weinkratz, Les Barany, Brendan Fowler, Mike Aho, Sto, Lisa Lebofsky and D* Face.

Archived news

For years I have loved the ambient musings of Brian Eno & Harold Budd among others. What always fascinated me about the audio soundtracks they create is how they blur the lines between music and the spaces between the music and live in that unknown void between holding your attention and losing it.

Derek Lerner (someone whose work I have also admired for over a decade) has created a video called metaverse that explores a similar grey area between virtual worlds and the real world.

Interestingly enough, when I started to watch the video my speakers were muted and the first thing that came to my mind was “I think this is what ambient music would look like.” Then I turned the speakers up to discover that Lern was way ahead of me, brilliantly using La Muchacha de Los Suenos Dorados (composed by Harold Budd, Daniel Lentz, and Ruben Garcia) to compliment the feedback looping visuals.

As inspiring as the first GHava stuff that blew me away and brought me back to the drawing board in the 90’s. Thanks again Lern.

INTO THE AIR W/——- GHAVA : Opening Fri. Dec. 12th

December 10, 2008 | Tags: | Categories: Art, GHava, My News

For the last few weeks I have been collaborating with my partners at GHAVA on an art exhibition that is opening this Friday (December 12th 2008) at W/——- in Manhattan’s Chinatown.

From point to line to plane, into the air, over time. Four known dimensions. Connection, tension, illumination. A small attempt at an impossible representation.

A meditation on the metaverse

July 16, 2008 | Tags: , , , , | Categories: My News

Greg Verdino, July 16, 2008

If you’re like me, you sometimes need an excuse to take a breather in the middle of a hectic week. Maybe this video, “Metaverse” by NYC-based visual artist Derek Lerner, will fit the bill. If you can find five minutes of downtime — or more importantly, if you need five minutes of downtime — Lerner’s piece might be just the thing to help you detox, de-stress and focus on something other than the chaos of your day-to-day grind.

If you’re totally geeked-out and want to learn more about the inspiration for this video, here is the story in Derek’s own words.  Interesting stuff for those of us who expend even a small portion of our massive brainpower on topics like mobility, virtual worlds and the blur between our physical and digital lives.

“For the last year I have been heavily involved in virtual worlds, primarily Second Life. This has prompted many thoughts about the concept of virtual space in general as well as blurring lines between simulation and real.

Mixing of realities, infinite space, multi-user online 3D collaborative environments, and time travel.

When asked to contribute work to the NOKIA Trends Lab project I immediately started to think about the level of connectivity and immersive experience handheld wireless hybridized multifunction devices offer, resulting in a type of virtual space. The sense I get when walking down the street taking photos, listening to the radio, & then uploading images to a server is of a disjointed reality where one’s mind is in another place but body is walking down the street.

Inspired by this, I used a NOKIA N93 to film video feedback loops creating abstract video drawings as a metaphor for 3D immersive virtual space. Infinite syndicated regurgitated communicative white noise evoking feelings of becoming so intertwined with digital communications that the grayness of life as we currently know it is a blurry place of virtual and real.”
